Football, Friendship, and Healing: How Sands United FC support Bereaved Dads

Sands United is a unique way to support bereaved Dads and bring them together through a shared love of sport, find a support network, and feel at ease talking about their grief when they’re ready.  By building trust and a common bond by playing together as a team, Sands United hope that many more will be able to break the silence about baby loss and help others to do the same.

On 13 October 2024 our partners at Sands United FC of Worcester played their first ever game against Sands United FC of Dudley. This was such a special occasion for both the team and for our charity.

Stevie Stones has, and continues to support a number of players on the team, and this has been reflected in the kit chosen by team manager Ross:

Match day involved a short trip to Dudley where a similar network of bereaved fathers had come together to form their own team. Despite the competitive game played, the experience was simply wonderful. All players had been directly linked to a tragic case of child loss, some more recent and raw than others. This made supporting one another (even the other team!) more important – and that is exactly what happened.

The match was intense, and the competition fierce. But football was just the backdrop. The real story of the day was the compassion, the shared understanding, and the incredible sense of support that extended beyond the pitch. Players from both teams found themselves cheering for one another, because in that moment, winning or losing wasn’t the point—surviving, healing, and moving forward were.

The records show that Dudley ran out as winners. But in truth, every man who played, every person who watched, and everyone who supported this event walked away a winner. Together, we created an environment where fathers, often feeling the weight of grief in isolation, could find strength and support, surrounded by others who truly ‘get it’.

We hope that these matches continue to support bereaved Dads who have an interest in sport, and inspire them to join this growing network of support. Because no one should have to walk through grief alone.

We work closely with the Worcester branch of Sands to build awareness of the support available to bereaved parents in the Worcestershire area. By working together, we can help families to access the best support available, whatever their needs.
